Hamon Belers de Aubigny was brother to Roger Lord Mowbray born around 1120 died 1160.

I visited St Mary's in Melton Mowbray recently and saw this tomb and I have been researching Sir Hamon since although there is very little information about him but plenty of geneology and information about Lord Mowbray as mentioned in the stone above the tomb.

The information I found was Hamon Belers de Aubigny was brother to Roger Lord Mowbray born around 1120 died 1160. All the Lord Mowbrays since then did not have a brother called Hamon and he is the only member of the Mowbray Aubigny to be buried at Melton.

So my conclusions would lead me to say this is Hamon Belers de Aubigny from 12th Century.

Bellire :

from Bellieres, near Alencon. "In the south aisle of the church of Melton Mowbray, under a round arch, is a cross-legged knight in a round helmet of mail with a band, his shield on his left arm, bearing Gules a lion rampant sable; his sword is under it; his belt is plated, and there is a dog at his feet. Over him is inscribed, in modern characters,

"This is the Lord Hamon,
Brother to the Lord Mowbray."

This latter was the son of Nigel de Albini, Roger, who, by command of Henry I., took the name of Mowbray."—Nichols Leicestershire. The tomb of Hamon's grandson, Rafe (date 1170) is also there, and is "erroneously ascribed by Mr. Le Neve to Adam de Vilers." I can find no mention of a third brother of Roger, Lord Mowbray's, in their pedigree, but it seems certain that Hamon de Beler received his Leicestershire lands by his grant, and bore his arms in different tinctures, though most probably only as those of his suzerain. Their ancient seat, Kirkby Belers, retains their name

If you ever get over to Warwick, please stop by here: http://www.stmaryswarwick.org.uk/index.php?/stmarys/history_architecture

The church was built by my 17th Great Grandfather, and he's buried there in a tomb, along with his parents (my 18th Great Grandfather and Grandmother).

Lovely set of photos today, Chris. Of course, and sounding like a broken record, the b&w garden = bg.

is that a radiator in front of the knight's tomb? That's certainly a shame and an odd placement.

I love history, so I always enjoy your narratives that go along with your excursions. Thanks so much for that!

Unfortunately yes it is a Victoriam rediator. THose Victorians never had any sense with churches. The refurbished and rebuilt so many destorying much of the old medieval buildings

The shield reminds me of that Jesus painting that was 'restored' last year. It looks like someone's had a go at it with a pot of shoe polish. Do you know if it was originally plain?

Looking closly at the cadava tomb you can see in the carvings where paint originally was and has since flaked away

I think most of these types of tombs were originally painted but over the years with wear and tear they have lost the paint

I believe this tomb was in the original church at Melton and when it was enlarges and rebuilt in 14th century the tomb was build into a wall rather than left standing

So it's actually still the tomb with occupant and not just a relocated carving?

I believe so lve seen other churches with similar tombs that are older than the church and something conscrated and as big l dont think would have been moved maybe the builders didnt like the idea of moving the dead. I do know he died on crusade
