Church Rock Cemetery Nottingham

One of those unknown gems in Nottingham is The Nottingham Church (Rock) Cemetery.
Referred to as The Rock Cemetery by local people because of the sandstone rocks and caves on which it is built. It is considered to be by far the most attractive cemetery. The tunnels, caverns and natural sandstone rock formations give this cemetery it's unique layout and interest.
There are no natural caves in Nottingham. All were dug out at some time or another for a purpose. Those in the vicinity of the Rock Cemetery were once part of a sand mine

Date: 2013-01-11 12:19 am (UTC)I get asked why do I walk around cemeteries when they are morbid and creepy and spooky places?
I simply say that, you have nothing to fear from the dead. It was those people that made us the people we are today. Cemeteries are a memorial to those who rest in them, a tribute to those who lived before.
Also that in a lot of the old cemeteries you can see the whole history of a town or village and its fascinating. You can trail the migration of families and you own families past.
Also there are some amazing sculptures and carving in cemeteries. Many of the headstones are just beautiful and throw in nature like in my picture above...
